Description CTA has financed the translation into English of another Agrodok booklet from Agromisa, 'Green manuring and other forms of soil improvement in the Tropics'.



Agromisa is a volunteer organization, established in 1934, of students and graduates of the



Agricultural University of Wageningen in the Netherlands. It aims to improve the position of socially and economically under-privileged groups in developing countries by Transferring agricultural knowledge to those organizations and persons who are working for the benefit of such groups.



One of the means employed to do this is the production of low-prced, simple manuals such as this one on green manuring and other forms of soil improvements in the Tropics.



Particular attention is paid to plants which can fix atmospheAc nitrogen - the legumes, which are suitable for areas where the soil contains little nitrogen and as a result crop yields are limited.



Chemical manure is not yet easily available in all places, or is too expensive for farmers.



However, nitrogen-fixing plants can be grown and used as a fertilizer for other crops that require nitrogen but cannot fix it themselves.



Plants which are able to fix atmospheric nitrogen are called green manures because when they are ploughed into the soil they are a form of organic manure. They are also used as so- called cover crops to prevent erosion by wind and water.



This Agrodok booklet has been written for fieldworkers in developing countries and anyone else interested in practical information in soil improvement and conservation by organic means. Only those relevant scientific publications have been included which have data of practical application. There is a bibliography for further information.



The booklet is aimed at some who will not have an agricultural background, and for this reason there are explanatory chapters on the soil, soil conservation and fertilization, and practical possibilities for green manuring in the semi-arid, semihumid, and humid Tropics.



The appendices contain background information about green manuring and addresses of green manure seed and inoculant suppliers
