Description |
CTA has co-funded a two part video film on dryland farming in Africa, which has been co-produced by ICRISAT (International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics) and the Open University of the United Kingdom. The video on African dryland agriculture will form part of the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation)/Open University course on the environment. The aim of this series, linked with the OU course, is to create awareness of the complex interactions involved in environmental processes and their consequences; to provide the basic scientific, technical, and socio-economic background for students to understand the constraints within which political decisions about the environment are made; and to provide students with the knowledge needed to evaluate, challenge, and participate in the making of environmental policy decisions. The programmes on African dryland agriculture include a case study of rural land management made in collaboration with ICRISAT (with commentaries in both Enalish and French). which demonstrates the nature of the environment - both the constraints and opportunities; the strength and limitations of current agricultural practices; the improved practices derived from research findings, and the justification for them; and the socio-economic and political requirements for adopting improved practices. The video is intended for trainees and visitors at ICRISAT centres in Africa and Asia, for specialist staff on liaison visits in semiarid tropical countries, for the donors, boards, and groups assisting international research on dry land farming, and for scientific collaborators in national agricultural research and development programmes. Via television the video will be viewed both by Open University students and by viewers worldwide throuch BBC syndication.
