Description |
Rattan is a vine that clings to branches in tropical forests. It is used in furniture making which helps to supplement the incomes of the labourers who harvest it. It also supplies a varied processing industry that employs thousands of South-East Asian craft workers and provides jobs in specialized export firms. However, forest clearance is now preventing natural regeneration of rattan. A video has recently been brought out by IDRC (International Development Research Centre) of Canada aimed at forestry workers, development officers and ecologists. In it, an Asian researcher tells how rattan has traditionally been part of his environment; he describes the processing methods and research undertaken to protect this valuable resource.
