Description A new technique is being developed in Israel that should increase the growth rates of freshwater prawns, as well as reducing food wastage.

Prawns locate food by detecting compounds given off by food materials and when these compounds are no longer given off, the prawns have no further urge to search.

Most prawn farmers use pelleted food which gives off the necessary attractants, but the effect wears off after an hour. So if the pellet has not been eaten within that time, it will probably be wasted.

Scientists of the Agriculture Research Organization at the Volcani Centre, near Tel Aviv, have identified and isolated some of the natural attractants.

In the laboratory the scientists have shown that when these compounds are added to the water on their own they stimulate prawns to seek something to eat. These attractants also seem to be effective for about an hour.

So, instead of feeding several fumes a day to avoid wastage, a farmer could feed just once, and then add the attractants to the pond at intervals during the day.

Experiments in the laboratory have indicated that prawns fed in this way eat more food and grow faster. Wastage is reduced by 20%.
