Description The need for new sustainable farming systems has been recognized for a long time. Systems that are intensive, but at the same time regenerative, must be developed.



Aquaculture offers a way in which land can be 'extended' and also regenerated. Fish convert plants and animal waste into high quality protein and the enriched pond mud can fertilize crop land. But the successful integration of this type of aqua-agriculture needs considerable research, exchange of information and training.



Recognizing this, the Centre for Living Aquatic Resources Management (ICLARM) and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) both based in the Philippines, have joined forces to look into the potential of rice-fish farming. Research is needed on the fish component, requirements of the rice crop and on understanding the attitudes of farmers towards rice-fish farming.



In a separate study, ICLARM is involved in collaborative research in the Zomba district of Malawi, looking at how different land types can be linked up with pond 'crops'.
