The Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center (AVRDC) in Taiwan has increased its training programmes and its interaction with national programmes as a response to the greatly increasing demand for vegetables and the concern for human nutrition in developing countries. Training is designed to give participants first-hand experience of vegetable production and quality improvement. The links AVRDC has with some 50 countries in collaborative programmes has enhanced information exchange and germplasm and technology transfer. In two years AVRDC has trained 73 junior researchers, vegetable specialists and extension workers from Lesotho, Malaysia, Korea, Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand. These trainees are now actively engaged in vegetable research and development programmes in their own countries. AVRDC has also developed training materials and visual aids on mature technologies generated from research. The Center makes available to national programmes copies of video Films on integrated pest management of the sweet potato weevil, and slide sets on the bacterial wilt of tomato, anthracnose of pepper, and pepper viruses.
