Description In June 1990, the Commonwealth Secretariat announced the setting up of a one million-acre ecology project in Guyana's tropical forest.

Guyana has some of the finest and best-conserved tropical rain forest in the world, and the Guyana Government has set aside 360,000ha (nearly a million acres), a third of which is to be kept as virgin forest where flora and fauna can be conserved and studied. This area is virtually uninhabited. The rest of the forest will be developed on an environmentally sustainable basis for the benefit of those living there.

The Commonwealth Expert Group, who are responsible for the project, intend to set up an International Centre for research and training in the management of tropical ram forests. The Centre will be co-funded by other international bodies concerned with environmental issues. It will study the chosen area, which has great biological diversity and provides a gene pool of enormous value to research in agriculture and medicine. It will also explore the ways in which tropical forests help regulate global carbon dioxide and radiation levels.

The local inhabitants will be provided with skills and tools to develop their habitat without damaging it, and projects will be set up to increase their earnings through milling, timber processing and small-scale mining.
