Description |
Improving livestock productivity offers a major opportunity for increasing food supplies in Africa. Several factors contribute to low animal production levels, but disease IS often the major constraint. Three recent books explore the subject further. A Contribution to the Understanding of the Epidemiology and Control of Livestock Diseases in Africa, by R W Paling, looks at the occurrence and prevalence of disease, parasites and host susceptibility. It concludes with a general discussion and suggested areas for future research. It is written for the ; specialist reader and includes extensive scientific data. Theileriosis in Eastern, Central and Southern Africa, proceedings of a workshop on East Coast fever immunization held at Lilongwe, Malawi in 1988 and organized by the International Laboratory for Research on Animal Diseases (ILRAD), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Organization of African Unity (OAU). Gastro-intestinal parasites are one of the most neglected areas of veterinary care in much of Africa. A spiral-bound handbook, Gastro-intestinal parasites of ruminants in Africa has been written to help redress this imbalance. It is designed for routine use in all types of animal health institutions. It presents procedures and techniques for the identification, diagnosis, survey and control of intestinal parasites of ruminants in sub-Saharan Africa that can be applied in a variety of circumstances and institutions including universities, national laboratories and the more rudimentary veterinary outposts.
