Animal traction is an important means towards achieving the sustainable livelihood of rural people in developing countries. Harnessing and implements for animal traction by Paul Starkey addresses some of the problems of, and possible solutions to, this vital area of agriculture. It aims to present animal traction in the context of the prevailing environments and farming systems. Harnessing and implements is the first in a series of three thematic 'Animal traction resource books' by Starkey and others, published by GTZ in conjunction with the already-published Animal traction directory: Africa. In this volume Paul Starkey combines a detailed understanding of the practical problems encountered in the field with a comprehensive review of published information. Readers can discover not only relevant printed sources, but also contacts and organizations with experience in the various topics discussed. Starkey discusses fully the mechanical principles of traction, common and less common harnessing systems, manufacture and selection of equipment, implements for crop production and draft assessment and work rates. There are many diagrams, charts, black and white photographs and line drawings throughout the book. Harnessing and implements is available free of charge from Deutsches Zentrum fur Entwicklungtechnologien (GATE) for organizations and individuals in Third World countries and from bookshops in Europe.
