Fe Frialde is the owner of a factory in the Philippines that makes paper from rice straw. The factory was started m 1986 with five people working in one room and a yard. Now it employs 55 part time workers and fumed over US$20,000 in the first half of 1990. The paper is hand-made from rice straw, abaca, banana, cogon grass and other natural fibres. The main constituent, rice straw, is a free by-product from the experimenta1 fields of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). IRRI provided the initiative and orders to get started in 1986. This was through its 'Prosperity through Rice programme, a joint project with the University of the Philippines and the Asian Development Bank. Training in the technique of paper-making was given by the Forest Product Research and Development Institute. Initially, just plain paper was made, but the factory has now expanded into art paper and popular novelty items such as papier mache boxes and dolls, which now account for a large percentage of the sales.
