FAO Fisheries Technical Paper 313, Fishery management options for Lesser Antilles countries, reports that although the prominent recommendation in most plans is for better information, there are many actions which could be taken now based on available information and common sense. Since coastal resources are often over exploited, these actions usually involve regulating fisheries in some way. Although such action is difficult to implement, it is essential if the long-term potential of the entire resource spectrum is to be realized for the benefit of the people of the regions. If blatantly destructive practices, such as dynamiting, trap poaching and egg scrubbing on lobster, cannot be controlled, it will be very difficult to gain the necessary cooperation of the honest fishermen. Part 1 of the paper presents the working principles on which the fishery management options are based. Part 2 reviews approaches to fishery management and Part 3 contains the resource specific sections for example spiny lobster, flyingfish, sea turtles etc. Fishery management options for Lesser Antilles countries by Robin Mahon 1990 126pp ISBN 92 5 10942 3 Fisheries Technical paper 313 FAO Via delle Terme di Cararcalla 00100 Rome ITALY Wheat genetic resources meeting diverse needs, edited by J P Srivastava and A B Damania 1990 391pp ISBN 0 471 92880 John Wiley & Sons Ltd Baffins Lane, Chichester West Sussex PO19 1UD, UK |
