Description The United Nations Sudano-Sahelian Office (UNSO) is bringing out a series of technical booklets to help further its aim of fighting drought and desertification in the 22 countries of the Sudano-Sahelian region.

UNSO was formed in 1973 as a response to the scourge of drought in the region, and has since expanded its activities from the original objective of recovery and rehabilitation to planning and coordination; mobilizing resources from outside countries; establishing relevant projects and programmes; focussing work of such agencies as the Permanent Interstate Committee on Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS); and spreading information on the ecological and human factors involved in the control of drought and desertification.

The new publications were inspired by this last activity and are intended for decision-makers, administrators, development workers, researchers, teachers and the interested public. Although the subject matter of the full-colour booklets is highly technical (the first two titles are Ecological monitoring: the Senegal model and Lakes of grass; regenerating Bourgou in the inner delta of the Niger River), the language used is for the non-expert and avoids jargon.
