Description The Tenth World Forestry Congress will take place in Paris from 17 - 26 September, 1991, under the double aegis of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the French government. Some 160 countries will be represented by 3000 specialists from every branch of forestry, and a 100 or more international organizations, research institutes and universities will also send delegates.

Under the umbrella theme of 'Forests- our future heritage' delegates will address such specific problems as the potential effects on climate of deforestation and reafforestation, and the development of forestry-based industries.

The division of the programme into sections will permit all aspects of forestry-based activities to be addressed during the course of the congress: the forest as a protective heritage; the conservation and protection of the forest heritage; forest and trees in land development; development and management of the forest heritage; the forest a financial heritage and policies and organizations.

At the end of the debates the congress will table a solemn declaration laying down the terms for future international cooperation. And the recommendations of the conference will be put to the governments concerned to persuade them to review their national forestry policies and evolve better management practices:

'This is a time of crisis for the forests, and this Congress gives us an unique opportunity to exchange information and encourage international cooperation so that forest worldwide can be managed and developed sustainably,' said Edouard Saouma, Director-General of the FAO.
