Description A new study carried out in Tanzania has concluded that energy intake is the major limiting factor in the growth of ruminants on semi-arid grasslands in that country, and that, contrary to longheld belief, protein supplements alone are not effective in promoting growth.

The study concludes that concentrate supplements for weaned lambs and goat kids should contain high energy and only moderate amounts of protein. The growth rate of grazing lambs and kids can be improved by 30-60g per day by a daily supplement of 200g concentrate (12 MJ ME/kg and 12-13% DCP, corresponding to mixture of maize bran with 30% CSC). A growth rate of 100g/day requires a total intake of 8.5 MJ ME and 55g DCP. As a proportion of the basic diet this means a supplement content of 4.6 MJ ME and 37g DCP. If 400g of concentrate are given it must contain 11.5 MJ ME/kg DM and 9% DCP - corresponding to maize bran mixed with only 15% CSC.

The authors of the study state that more research using different energy-protein ratios is still required, if only to alert agriculturalists more fully to the results of this study.
