Description A village in the foothills of Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, is reaping its own 'green revolution'.

A project involving 78 villages in the region around Mareu has seen maize yields rise from the usual four to eight bags to an amazing twelve to twenty-eight bags per acre. The coordinator of this project has been Dr Norman Borlaug, Nobel Prize winner for his work on high yielding wheat and inspiration behind the Green Revolution. Together with former US President and founder of Global 2000 Jimmy Carter, they cut through red tape to persuade administrations to provide the necessary financial backing for their proposed projects.

In Tanzania the government was able to guarantee a supply of fertilizer and a change m its agricultural pricing policy which enabled the setting up of the project at Mareu. Starting with just 67 management training plots in March 1989, the project now administers 4,286 in 78 villages. Each farmer was given a one-acre demonstration plot, was helped to buy the right seed and fertilizer and has the help of specially trained workers. Results now speak for themselves and in the words of Tanzania's President, farmers 'have achieved yield levels that have never existed in their fondest dreams'.
