The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) has been working for the last two decades to promote sustainable development in the Third World. It carries out its role of promoting sound management and sustainable use of natural resources through three main channels of activity: policy research, advocacy and services. The work is divided into a number of Programmes, each with its own Director, staff and budget. The Drylands Programme collaborates with other agencies to publish documents on developments in arid regions. It is working with researchers from Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Sudan, Zambia and Zimbabwe to explore the potential of those small areas that concentrate water and fertile soils within dryland environments. The Sustainable Agriculture Programme has a number of research projects in which the participation of local people is a significant factor. Special studies are being conducted into the importance of wild foods, grasses and other wild resources and concentrates on the way local ecological conditions affect tenure systems. A central element of the support the Programme gives to government and NGO institutions is the running of training programmes. These mostly focus on the techniques of Rapid Rural Appraisal. The two main objectives of the Southern Networks Programme are to provide support for South-South networks and research on NGO-related issues where better information is a prerequisite for changing policies or structures. IIED Field Services cover consultant selection, project identification, design and evaluation technical assistance, information and policy reviews, briefing and training. The IIED Register of Environmental and Sustainable Development Expertise is a computerized database which contains extensive details of the skills and experience of included individuals. IIED publishes books, reports, bulletins and papers. Perspectives is a bulletin which is published twice yearly and includes articles and news items. The Drylands Programme produces its own quarterly development newsletter, Haramata. RRA Notes is an informal journal of contributions by Rapid Rural Appraisal practitioners in the form of short articles and case studies. The Notes are available free of charge and may be received on a regular basis, upon request. Many IIED papers are available free of charge to readers in developing countries. In addition to its own publication list, the Programmes publish major works through IIED's wholly owned, but editorially independent, publishing house, Earthscan Publications.
