Description |
In the mid-1980s the leucaena psyllid struck south-east Asia causing widespread defoliation. The leucaena variety K8, which was the most widely planted cultivar at that time, was particularly susceptible to attack. An international conference and workshop on psyllid problems and management was formed as a response to the out break. However, the Nitrogen Fixing Tree Association (NFTA) still continued to receive requests for Leucaena K8/K28 seed, despite its susceptibility to attack by psyllids. NFTA maintain that it is not necessary to use these varieties when there are numerous other Leucaena hybrids and cultivars available. NFTA specialize in helping people select species of nitrogen fixing trees most appropriate to the ecosystem and the community needs of their area.
