A significant budgetary cutback was adopted at the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research's (CGIAR) annual conference in Washington held from 28 October -1 November 1991. 1992 will see the budget of $251 million cut by six million dollars. Visvanathan Rajagopalan, Vice-President of the Bank for Sectorial Policy and Research, was nominated as next head of the consultative group by Lewis Preston, President of the World Bank; this appointment was confirmed by the conference. The consultative group, now 20 years old, comprises representatives of 40 governments, the World Bank, FAO and UNDP. It has 16 centres for agricultural research, five of which are in Africa.
