Description In November 1988 CTA organized a seminar in Lisbon in order to define the needs of the lusophone ACP countries in the field of agricultural information. In response, delegates emphasized the need for practical handbooks for technical officers and for the translation of existing reference works in English and French into Portuguese. CTA has therefore undertaken the translation of two FAO books on trypanosomiasis control.

Trypanosomiasis is a disease that can be fatal to both men and animals, and where it is endemic prevents the use of a lot of potentially productive land (over approximately ten million square kilometres) in Africa. In 1975 the FAO launched a huge programme to try and control the parasites and their vectors (the tsetse fly) and thus give new life to cattle-rearing development projects. These books were written in response to the need to train the personnel working in tsetse control in the field, and are intended as practical manuals for extension workers.

Although pastoralism is severely limited by trypanosomiasis, three methods of controlling the disease can improve development: treatment of cattle by medication; control of the tsetse fly; and rearing of genetically trypanotolerant cattle. These CTA publications deal with the first two of these approaches.

'Tripanossomoses animais em Africa: diagnostico, tratamento, prevencao' is a practical guide which completes the training textbook described below. It is intended as a reference work, using concise and simple vocabulary and avoiding difficult scientific terminology. Where possible, case studies are presented.

Manuel de preparacoa de pessoal de controle des tse-tse. The use of drugs to control trypanosomiasis is difficult because it is not always feasible to get all the cattle into one place to inject them and some parasites are resistant to the drugs. But it can be just as efficacious to take measures against the vector by eradicating the type of tsetse which transmits the disease to human beings and cattle.

This three-volume handbook contains details of elementary biology, structure, behaviour and ecology of the tsetse flies and the main means of their control.

These two works, published jointly by CTA and FAO, have been supported by the Portuguese Institute of Economic Cooperation and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. CTA is grateful to Professor Dr A Martins Mendes for his valuable help with technical editing.
