Description CTA has financed the translation into English of another book in the Land and life series: Ways of water: run-off, irrigation and drainage. Like other books in the series, Ways of water is aimed at practitioners and students of agriculture, rural development and associated subjects. It takes traditional practices into account and adds details of appropriate modern improvements based on affordable technology. The book can be used by secondary schools and vocational centres as well as for degree and diploma studies, but it is chiefy meant for practical use in the field. It is written in a clear, highly illustrated style which will be appreciated by those for whom English is a second language

Run-off, erosion, soil drainage and irrigation comprise the heart of the book. Rainfall, evaporation, the effect of raindrops on soil and the destructive consequences of water are explained. The infiltration of water below the ground which feeds springs and wells and the intimate relationship between plants and water both in the soil and the atmosphere, are also considered in some detail.

The book is a practical manual of solutions and techniques accessible to small farmers and growers, farm managers, middle and professional level extension staff and technicians, students and teachers. The contents are presented in 62 units, each illustrated with many clear line drawings, diagrams and black-and-white photographs which cover the multitude of subjects needed for an understanding of the ways of water and its use in practice. The examples on which the book is based come from appropriate village-level technology and farming. In addition to those involved in agriculture, the book will also be appreciated by students or practitioners of general science, geography, hydrology, engineering, building, rural development, community health, public health and development studies.
