Description Trials conducted by the Microbiology Department of the University of Leicester, UK, to decontaminate water by using seeds from the tree Moringa obleifa were reported in Spore 34 (Newslines page 11).

Professor Hassan Musnad from the Forestry Research Centre in Soba, Sudan, has sent a report of similar work being done in Sudan. He reports that the seeds of the genus Moringa were found to be very effective in cleaning turbid water and reducing gram-negative bacteria to tolerable levees. The most effective part of the plant was found to be the seed coat (testa).

Moringa oleifera was found to be more effective than M. drauhardii (from Madagascar) ' or M. perigrena (from Kenya). I M. oleifera also has the advantage that it can be easily propagated by seeds and by cuttings.
