Description How can swamplands be made more productive? This was the question addressed by scientists at an international seminar in Antananarivo, Madagascar, in December 1991 on the subject of 'Swamplands and rice-growing'. The seminar was organized by the Centre de cooperation internationale en recherche agronomique pour le developpement (CIRAD), the Institut francais de recherche scientifique pour le developpement en cooperation (ORSTOM) and the Centre internationale de la recherche appliquee au developpement rural (FOFIFA), Madagascar.

More than 110 delegates from different geographical areas came to exchange their knowledge and experience of these small flat-bottomed valleys where water accumulates where water table levels are high and which therefore have good potential for rice cultivation.

The following statistics emerged: Asia produces the greatest amount of rice grown on swamplands (25,000km2) although this is only 2% of the total area under rice. The potential of these valley swamps is enormous and could bring great benefits to the areas concerned. Madagascar has the highest pro portion (42%) of rice grown In swamplands. Swamplands therefore hold a central place in the agricultural heritage.
