Description Inorganic fertilizer has become a major input in rice production around the world, but as its use has increased so the use of traditional organic materials has decreased. As well as the detrimental effects inorganic chemicals can have on the environment, the fossil fuels used to make them are becoming more scarce. As the demand for rice increases, the interest in sustainable fanning by using renewable resources easily and cheaply available on the farm is growing. Such systems maintain soil fertility as far as possible by traditional biological means such as rotating cereal crops with legumes, recycling manure and other organic wastes and using green manures. Research has shown that a combination of these traditional methods with the moderate use of chemical fertilizers is more effective than any single nutrient source in improving soil quality, nutrient use efficiency and therefore yields.



A primer on organic-based rice farming outlines the methods and reasons for integrating organic and chemical fertilizer use, with emphasis on green manure crops. About 50 legumes are described and most are multipurpose crops providing fodder and fuel as well as extra soil nutrients.
