by H Sharma, S Taneja, K Leuschner and K Nwanze, 1992 48pp

Published by ICRlSAT, Patancheru, Andhra Pradesh 502324, INDIA Sorghum is one of the most important cereals in the semi-arid tropics. Grain yields on peasant farms are generally low, insect pests being one of the mayor factors limiting production. There are over 150 species which damage sorghum crops, of which the sorghum shoot fly, the spotted stem borer, me sorghum midge and head bugs are the major pests. This brochure describes techniques that can be used to screen for resistance under choice (field) and no choice (cane) conditions. Methods of evaluating insect damage, and the sources of resistance to the major pests are also discussed.
