Description |
Livestock farmers in the tropics face a far wider spectrum of problems than those in temperate zones. Prolonged periods of high temperatures, high humidity, chronic water shortages and underfeeding of animals all contribute to stress in their stock. The risk of diseases, particularly those caused by parasites, is much higher than in temperate climates. Add to the comparison that many tropical countries suffer from struggling economies and poor infrastructure, and it becomes easy to see that animal production in these regions faces very real constraints. Tropical countries, however, do have significant resources as regards livestock production. There are still reasonably large populations of cattle and people to manage them, and extensive areas of pasture on which it would be difficult to envisage any other enterprise than livestock rearing. Implementing improved systems of production requires that the necessary support structures be established: extension, veterinary assistance, agricultural credit, marketing and research. Animal production in the tropics and subtropics, co-published by CTA and Macmillan, summarizes these problems in its introduction. Written by a former Director of both the International Livestock Centre for Africa (ILCA) and Institute d'Élevage et de Médicine Vétérinaires des Pays Tropicaux (IEMVT), the book is a valuable practical resource for agriculture students, livestock producers and researchers. The physical aspects of climate are explained prior to dealing with animal production in relation to climate. Water resources, forage, and diseases in animal production complete Part 1. Parts II and III cover animal production genetics and production systems. The book is well-illustrated throughout and the text is supplemented by extensive use of tables and graphs.
