Description |
In 1987 the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) called attention to the immense problems and challenges facing world agriculture if present and future food needs were to be met, and to the need for a new approach to agricultural development. Smallholders in the tropics need appropriate strategies and techniques which will lead to sufficient and reliable yields but will not deplete the resource base on which they depend. To help smallholders make their farming systems more productive and sustainable, development workers, in their turn, need appropriate strategies and techniques for working with farmers. How can development workers assist smallholders in their constant endeavour to adapt their agriculture to changing conditions? This is the central concern of Farming for the Future. The book examines the strategies and techniques of Low-External-Input and Sustainable Agriculture (LEISA) and shows how development workers can assist small-scale farmers in making the best use of low-cost local resources to solve their agricultural problems. The emphasis is therefore on using methods of Participatory Technology Development (PTD) to find site-specific solutions. The publisher of the book, the Information Centre for Low-External-lnput and Sustainable Agriculture (ILEIA), through its network of over 4000 members has collected the experiences of innovative farmers, field-workers and supporting scientists, thereby providing grassroots knowledge and advice. Throughout the well-illustrated text tables and diagrams provide additional information. Factual case-histories are highlighted in boxes. Written primarily for middle-level agricultural development staff in extension, research and training in the Third World, it will, nevertheless, be of interest to students, lecturers, research scientists, planners and donors in the areas of sustainable agriculture and development.
