Description The Pastoral and Environmental Network in the Horn of Africa (PENHA) was set up by a group of researchers and development workers from the Horn of Africa and became formally established in 1989. PENHA's primary consume is with the future of pastoralists in the region and their development.

Environmental degradation, famine, drought, wars, displacement and desert encroachment have combined with governmental neglect to bring about a crisis in pastoral production systems. There are also widespread misconceptions about pastoralism and agropastoralism and a lack of relevant empirical research. PENHA seeks to redress this imbalance.

PENHA's mandated region of operation is the intergovernmental Authority on Drought and Desertification (IGADD) region of Africa. This region covers Sudan, Somalia, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Uganda and Kenya and the organization works with and through partner institutes in the region - Institut supérieur d'etudes et de recherches scientifique et technique (ISERST), Djibouti; Ministry of Environment, Uganda; Kenya Energy and Environment Organization (KENGO), Kenya; and the Geography Department of the University of Khartoum, Sudan.

PENHA therefore has a regional perspective and by focusing on specific areas of research contributes towards a broader understanding of pastoral problems. Its newsletter PENHA News complements networking activities, wok-shops, collaborative research and informal talks, in ensuring mat the fruits of research are widely disseminated throughout the region.
