Description The single European Market of 1992 poses challenges and opportunities for the countries of the Caribbean.

The recent performance of Caribbean agriculture indicates the problems to be surmounted in EEC-Caribbean trade and cooperation arrangements. Preferential treatment can no longer be guaranteed in the same way as in the past. The Caribbean has been left no alternative but to look to means of diversifying its agriculture and to ways of improving efficiency of production.

The EEC has struggled towards regional unification with its single market without its problems, regional cooperation of this kind in the Caribbean would seem to be the obvious option for the future. The sing[e European market of 1992: implications and policy options for Caribbean agriculture examines these and other factors such as the GATT talks and the rapidly changing global scene and its impact on trade negotiations between the two regions.
