Description Ever wondered what agonies development workers go through in putting their mission into practice? The contributors to Effective fieldwork and managing conflict explain what effective development work is all about, what it should aim at and how to achieve goals. It explains, with painful honesty, the way in which a young development fieldworker often navigates between arrogance, uncertainty and commitment in order to gain the respect and trust of the communities with whom s/he is working. It concludes that the two crucial issues for field workers are making development effective, and managing conflicts.

The book offers 27 practical simulation cases to learn from by playing realistic situations and group discussion. Each case describes the roles for all participants and gives notes for the facilitator. These enable you to practise how to deal with committee members who are abusing their power, a treasurer with a leaky purse, and conflicts between communities and local governments or businesses. Sometimes a bit heavy on the learning, and a bit short on common sense, this book is a result of two week-long workshops, bringing together 12 development practitioners from various NGOs in southern Africa.

The same painstaking approach is evident in Community participation and financial sustainability which deals with finance, the issue which often disrupts and divides local initiatives. Twenty case studies look at how community groups deliberated on such choices as investing in roads or maintaining the forest, distribution of water, and the transformation of credit unions from savings clubs to self-funded investment banks. Pungent with southern African experiences and some unexplained linkages to the Dominican Republic, it is frightfully heavy on the process and not too strong on the output. Still, man does not live by bread alone
