Title Ghana's GAINS flourishes

Creator Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation

Description The question-and-answer service operated by the Ghana Agricultural Information Service (GAINS), launched early in 2000, is already experiencing operational difficulties of the largely positive kind! Their original targets of 150 information searches in a full year were exceeded in the first quarter of operation, with 253 searches being conducted for 128 clients. The demand for the QAS is much higher (600% on an annual basis) than was predicted, and it will soon be a question of anticipating demand more precisely, otherwise the obvious satisfaction of clients who seem mainly to be repeat customers will diminish. Whilst they admit to being overwhelmed, the organisers also expect the flood of queries was in part due to intensive publicity around the service s launch.

More queries can be expected though: the lively GAINSNEWS newsletter has circulated a request form to all subscribers, and is also available on their Website (csir.org.gh/gains/index.html). Incidentally, GAINSNEWS makes use of Spore as a source of news from outside Ghana, and even within, with our recent item on Ghana s yam exports (Spore 87).

Readers in Ghana and Nigeria with technical queries are asked to write to their QAS:
