Recent project reports indicate problems with the quality of cane sugar in Mauritius. The rising cost of labour has led to some manual operations such as the stripping of the cane to be dropped. Machines do little better, since they capture not just the canes but leaves, soil and stones as well. The resulting loss of quality has to be faced up however, to compensate for the losses incurred through the depreciation of the euro against the dollar, the freezing of sugar prices by the European Union and the new arrangements for sharing sugar revenues between producers and processors. The total shortfall is in the region of h 8 million to h 16 million. Among the measures proposed to remedy the problem are cleaning plants, a bonus/malus system and the breeding of high yield varieties. Similar problems exist in Fiji but for different reasons. The practice of setting fire to the sugar fields before harvesting into order to get rid of leaves and make cutting easier, is now estimated to reduce quality significantly; between 65% and 90% of the cane arrives burnt at the factory.
