In July 2001, Charles Mbambo wrote from Zimbabwe that 'maize harvesting is now over, and everyone is looking forward to storing the grain. It has to be protected against weevils but the price of pesticides is unaffordable for poor farmers. Dear farmers, may you try burnt cow dung to protect the grain. Collect dry dung and burn it. Fill two 20 litre containers with ash and mix thoroughly with 90 kg of maize grain. The odour of the ash will repel such weevils as Stophilus granarius and the lesser grain borer, Rhizopertha dominica. It s easy, does not involve money but only costs your spare time and energy to do it' The Anasazi people of what is now south-western USA used similar techniques with their maize, using sheep manure ash.
