The farmer knows best, and if s/he doesn t know all the options, then let s make more information available' was the message emanating from a workshop on Incentive measures for sustainable use and conservation of Agrobiodiversity held in Lusaka, Zambia, in mid-September 2001. The encounter was collectively organised by the SADC Plant Genetic Resource Centre, CTA and the international partners GTZ, IDRC and SIDA, and pooled the skills of 74 participants from 16 countries in eastern, central and southern Africa and Europe, India and Japan. The topic was discussed in the main article of Spore 90. As well as stressing governments roles in protecting local intellectual property, participants proposed a holistic mass of farm fairs, local seed banks, awareness building, training and information networks to benefit farmers. And they placed their faith in market forces: the farmer should conquer the niche food markets in Africa, Europe and beyond, where exotic fruits, vegetables and special animal breeds can command premium prices.
