For Samoa, taro was a major export crop and national staple food until the crop was wiped out by taro leaf blight in 1993. Scientists at the University of the South Pacific (USP), Western Samoa, are currently trying to overcome the regional problem of taro leaf blight. Three Samoan cultivars identified with strong resistance to the disease have been multiplied and distributed to farmers in Samoa. However, consumers in the local market prefer traditional Samoan taro, which is reported to have a better taste and cooking qualities.
