Description |
Credit from formal banking institutions is often hard to come by for farmers, women, rural industries, and microenterprises. The reason is the irrational fear of the banks who see micro borrowers as inherently high risk clients, vulnerable to market and economic changes. Often, a sizeable loan could make a huge difference to an agricultural enterprise. But it would have to come from a formal bank as the new wave of rural microbanks often place a ceiling on loan sizes in order to encourage smaller businesses. Helping formal banks overcome their hesitations about rural lending is well covered in Credit Guarantees, which painstakingly discusses the pros and cons of guarantee funds. Such funds, often fed by donor agencies, can provide the assurance a bank needs to protect a loan when the borrower does not have enough physical collateral or possessions. Detailed and persuasive, this book is for bankers who want to change their minds. Credit Guarantees: An Assessment of the State of Knowledge and New Avenues of Research.
