Description CTA has set itself the long-term target of shifting the distribution of its publications from a centralised system to a web including involving local partners in ACP countries. An early step in this strategy has been taken with the conclusion of a partnership agreement with the Department for Scientific and Technical Information (DIST) of the National Centre for Scientific and Technical Research in Burkina Faso.



The DIST is well placed for becoming the interface between CTA's Publications Distribution Service (PDS) and its current and potential subscribers. It has a long track record in the field of agriculture and dissemination of scientific information, a sound knowledge of the local market and a solid infrastructure for distributing and promoting publications. From now on, the DIST will handle all correspondence from current and potential subscribers in Burkina Faso to Spore and to the PDS; it will maintain the national list of subscribers; and it will promote CTA publications and co-publications to selected target groups. Finally, the DIST will also serve as the point of sale for these publications to the public at large, and to subscribers who have used up all their credit points.



This new approach will, CTA hopes, help in targeting its publications and distribution, as well as shaping them to subscriber needs through noting feedback provided to the local partner. And this pilot partnership will provide experience for CTA to compare the effectiveness of its centralised system with working through local partners.

At this time CTA is currently negotiating a similar type of partnership for a second pilot project in Zambia. Both pilot projects will be evaluated at a later stage, and it is planned if the project succeeds that CTA will extend the decentralisation of its distribution service to other ACP countries.
