Description On 2 August 1999, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) imposed severe restrictions on two widely used pesticides: methyl parathion and azynphos methyl. These organophosporous substances can no longer be used on market garden or fruit crops (nor on sugar cane or cotton). It has been established that they attack the nervous system of people as well as insects, as has been shown by the illnesses and deaths incurred among agricultural workers and children. Children are at particular risk because their nervous system is still in development, and they eat proportionately more fruit and vegetables than do adults. The EPA rulings only apply to the USA s areas of jurisdiction, but theirs is a message that others would do well to heed.
