Here are two simple, ingenious examples of the art, an ancient art in the Far East, of the rational use of natural resources, and, as it were, of killing two birds with one stone, or more to the point, raising gamebirds alongside fish. In the first system, ducks are raised in a pond, in a construction just above water level. Two duck shelters are built on a raft of bamboo, and joined together by a rectangular platform. Underneath the platform, and submerged in the water, is a metal frame in which the ducks can swim and feed, but from which they cannot escape. The bottom of the frame is made with a net through which the duck droppings can pass and be used by the fish. Among the advantages of this system are the fact that the ducks cannot catch and eat the fish, nor can they eat the plants in the pond. The fish, safe from predators, move around a great deal and fatten up quickly. Furthermore, the droppings can be spread around evenly, as the construction can be easily moved. In the second system, a henhouse is built on stilts, so as to eliminate manual collection of droppings. The openwork floor of the henhouse allows the droppings to fall onto a wooden board fixed below. The board can be tipped towards a mesh net fixed to the stilts. The droppings can be collected by tipping the board towards the net, which, by using long handles attached to it, can be moved around the fish pond. This avoids the eutrophication of the pond, by spreading the organic matter all around. And the simple, quick method of cleaning the henhouse cuts down the risks of disease for the hens. T.
