The second International Fair on Agriculture and Animal Resources, known in its host country Côte d Ivoire as SARA, was a runaway public success from the time it opened its doors on 26 November to when it closed them on 3 December 1999. After a shaky start in 1998, SARA achieved its goal of closing the gap between the rural and urban worlds. Excited townie visitors in Abidjan could discover the traditional activities of their country: the cultivation of coffee, cocoa, rubber, rice and maize, fish farming, cattle and goat rearing and more exotically rearing silkworms, frogs, giant snails and producing essential oils. One young visitor was heard to say in wonderment 'It s the first time I ve seen a rice plantation'. Not everyone was quite as enthusiastic, not least the exhibitors. For a stand of 18m2 they had to pay about FCFA 2 millions de FCFA (E3,000) ! No wonder that, as in similar trade fairs, a lot of small- and medium-scale enterprises were conspicuous by their absence. Such complaints seem to be a bit repetitive, as a local paper, the Notre Voie, warned in March 1999: the high prices charged by fora, fairs and exhibitions serve no one.
