Researchers at the Dutch Institute for Plant Breeding and Reproduction Research (CPRO-DLO) have produced an entirely new crop: the Fructanbeet . This is a sugar beet, which has been genetically modified to produce fructans, sucrose polymers used in low-calorie sweeteners, fat substitutes, and a range of pharmaceutical and industrial products. Genes taken from the Jerusalem artichoke were inserted into sugar beet. The resulting plant almost entirely converts the naturally produced saccharose into fructans.
