Description |
Relations between farmers and herders are often a source of conflict, in the Sahel as elsewhere. Each of them claims the right to use and manage the natural resources of water, land and forage. In Beiga, in northern Burkina Faso, local people have drawn up an agreement to settle community management of these resources, with support from the German development agency GTZ. Not an easy task, given that 10,000 farmers and herders live in the area of 400 km2, which is sparsely and irregularly fed by rains. It took quite some time to draw up the rules which now settle or prevent any dispute. Under the deal, some land is allocated solely to grazing and some to crops. During the rainy season, animals are not left alone to graze in the fields, nor near watering points; the cutting and selling of fodder is strictly controlled and trees are protected against being cut down. The agreement is now being tested for a two-year period. After that, if it has been successful it will become law.
