Description |
Cause for concern in Latin America: Brazilian oil palm plantations of the highly productive African variety of Elaeis guineensis have been decimated by a deeply destructive disease, of which nothing is know for the moment : heart rot (amarelecimento fatal). The research station at Rio Urubu in western Amazonia has started a race against the clock, seeking to develop, by hybridisation with local Amazonian species such as Elaeis oleifera, plants which are resistant to the disease and which are as productive as the African import. Time is running out, and the breeding process is long. Researchers are therefore also working on cloning the plant, to isolate the resistant gene in the Amazonian species with which to inoculate the African variety. They intend to go further still in their research, setting up a gene bank by collecting a multitude of varieties of oil palm and producing seeds with a high oil yield and slow growth, as well as others which are resistant to blight (Fusarium oxysporum var. elaeidis), an oil palm disease with which they are more familiar.
