Emmanuel Antwi, General Secretary of the Ghana Organic Agriculture Network (PO Box 6342, Kumasi, Ghana), observes that the development of a local organic certificate programme (see main article, page 1) is an important step in promoting organic farming in Ghana. The cost of external certification is so high that the poor farmers cannot afford it. Besides, the agroecological conditions and farming systems of most of these farmers may be quite different from what the external certifier is familiar with. This can lead to unnecessary criticisms and delays in the certification process.
