Description Veronica De Klerk, Manager of Women s Action for Development in Namibia, participated at the Athens

seminar on the Economic Role of Women

in Rural and Agricultural Development

the promotion of income-generating activities last October (see In Brief). After the event, she told CTA about a motto popular among participants: 'Human development if not engendered is endangered'. She further suggested that 'More men in decisionmaking roles should be included in future seminars. We heard quite a lot about how men are slowing down or blatantly barring women from getting into decisionm aking positions. If men in key positions are included in such seminars, I have no doubt that we can win their sympathy for the plight of women and find common ground, instead of continuously speaking in a vacuum among ourselves.

'I had interesting discussions with the very few men present at the conference (most of them having been invited to act as speakers and not just to listen and participate) and was inspired to learn how the conference had changed them almost overnight to firmly believe that everyone (men and women) should work actively towards the total upliftment of women.'

Spore comments: The Sixth Regional Conference on African Women, organised by the United Nations in Addis Ababa in November 1999, where many of the 1800 (mainly women) delegates were CTA contacts, made a similar recommendation, saying that one-third of the delegations to meetings on gender issues should be male.
