After more than five years of energetic service, Dr Jacques Baldensperger retired from CTA in December 1999. For many years a soil microbiologist in Senegal, Jacques was long associated with the French research organisation ORSTOM (now IRD). He joined CTA from the International Foundation for Science in Sweden, and in September 1996 became the first Head of the CTA s Seminars and Studies Department. He was closely associated with Spore, and his insistence on readability, scientific correctness and equity in issues of gender, language and basic human relations will be long remembered with respect and affection.
