Look before you leap' is a well-known saying but so is 'easier said than done'. National agricultural systems (NAS) in ACP countries need accurate, quality information to attain local development objectives. Determining exactly what kind of information is needed and what is no depends on the work to be done and the priorities. However, priority setting is a difficult task, involving various stakeholders, like extension staff, researchers, policymakers, and beneficiaries, each of whom have different agendas. To assist national partners in establishing their priority information themes, CTA has developed a participatory methodology for identifying and ranking them. It was tested in a three-day workshop at CTA in October 1999. In the next step, CTA will assist NAS bodies in applying the methodology in day-to-day usage and in establishing an exchange forum for partners on priority agricultural information themes.
