Title Genetically modified foods a little safer

Creator Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation

Description Novartis, a Swiss multinational, has developed a sugar-based replacement for antibiotic resistance marker genes. The latter are used in the development of genetically modified foods, but some scientists fear that these genes might spread to harmful gut bacteria, making them resistant to antibiotics. Novartis new alternative, manA, already exists in familiar crops, which should increase confidence in the safety of the method. Marker genes are used to reveal whether cells have taken up packages of new genes.
