Description |
A broad goat and sheep breeding plan was prepared in Kenya, in 1980. The major ideas of the plan were the establishment of foundation stock for both indigenous and exotic breeds, appraisal of the production potential of local breeds, Selection of indigenous breeds for some of the economic traits, crossbreeding of the locals and exotic to achieve the desired production level. The research was planned to be carried out at 9 research stations located in different parts of the country. The local sheep breeds selected in different parts of the country. The local sheep hreeds selected for the breeding programme were Red Masai and Black Head Persian, and the exotic breeds were Dorper, Corridale, Hampshire Down, Romeny Marsh and Merino. The indigenous goat breeds were Gall and East African Goat and the exotic breeds were Nubian, Toggenburg and Sannen.
