A fence on your land that is not level is not really a problem, although you might get into a dispute with your neighbour. For most other constructions it is no luxury to be able to apply at least the basic surveying methods before starting to dig irrigation canals, saw poles for a small bridge or build a store room or a field school for extension workers. This expanded and revised edition of Agrodok No. 6 provides you with the basic knowledge. It starts off by explaining what surveying is, how to position or map constructions spatially and in relation to other constructions and how to note it down, without causing misunderstandings. The next chapter connects your map with a mathematical framework, for any of your surveying measurements can be restricted to two sorts of geometric quantities: lengths between positions and angles between directions. Throughout the manual, measuring instruments, their applications and how to make them are discussed and one chapter is specifically dedicated to levelling instruments. The manual has a glossary of technical terms and a list of do s and don ts and its texts on what is, after all, a visual subject are, thankfully, well illustrated.
