Description Improved varieties of cowpea developed by the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and planted in Niger, yielded three times more than local varieties despite receiving only half the normal rainfall.

According to the IITA, 33 new varieties of cowpea yielded between 600 and 1500 kg/ha when grown on their own. All the new varieties matured in a shorter time than existing varieties, requiring between 56 and 67 days. The highest yields were obtained from the varieties with the longer maturing times, as that seemed to suit harsh Sahelian conditions. The best variety overall was IT82D-716, which yielded 1,424 kg/ha in 65 days. It is also resistant to thrips and bruchids, two plant pests.
